Results: Gerry Farnan/Mayo Cross Country
Six members made the trip to the Gerry Farnan Cross Country races in sunny breezy autumnal Phoenix Park today (Sunday).
Conditions were surprisingly good and firm underfoot, though the one mile lap course is tough on the outward half. Race starts were exciting, frantic, and intense (for spectators!) as competitors looked for vital early positions. Many well known International senior runners were there too, intent on putting down an early season marker in the open races.
The two races also incorporated trials for Irish Masters teams for next month’s Home Countries event in Belfast.
In the women’s 3 mile race (easily won by Fionnuala Britton 15:36) four members were taking part for the first time: Catherine Conway (Senior) looked comfortable throughout and finished a creditable 21st overall in 17:56, followed by Colette Tuohy W40 18:49, Angela O’Connor W45 18:54 and Pauline Moran W55 21:17. Colette, Angela and Pauline finished well up in their age categories and are waiting to see if they made the team for Belfast, which will be announced on Wednesday when the Irish Masters teams has been selected (‘wild cards’ may be submitted in advance by those choosing not to compete on the day).
Both TJ McHugh M35 28:39, and Danny Green M55 33:31 competed for the first time and completed a very demanding 5 miles over the same course . Thanks to Jim Gaughan for his advice and support on the day – no doubt he will be shouting out again next week on the streets of Dublin.
