Mike Griffin and Darren Brewer in action today at Belleek
The 2021 Connacht Cross Country Senior and Masters Championships continued today (Sunday October 31) with the second leg of the league.
Well done to Moy Valley AC who hosted the event at Belleek, Ballina.
A number of unevens age races started at noon and the course was well trodden with some testing soft sections by the time the two adult events took place.
Mayo AC had eight members competing in five categories.
Martina O’Connor was our lone runner again in the women’s Novice category incorporated in the women’s 4k. She ran another great race to finish first again this week of ten novice competitors and an excellent 2nd overall of the 38 finishers. She leads the Novice league after this second race of three.

In the same race five members competed in three categories: women’s w35, w50/men 65+.
As in Sligo last week, our four W50s were led home by Colette Tuohy 7th overall and 2nd W50. Angela O’Connor was 14th overall and 3rd W50; Pauline Moran 19th overall 5th W50 and Noreen McManamon 23rd and 6th W50, completing an excellent performance by the quartet in a w50 field of 13. In the W35 category Paula Donnellan finished 2nd and 13th overall.
Tom Hunt was the only M65 runner finishing 33rd in the same 4k event.
The men’s senior /masters incorporated seniors, novices, M35 and M50 categories. All 48 finishers ran eight laps approximately 8k. It was another endurance test today in real cross country conditions.
Mayo AC’s two M35 competitors ran strongly all through – Mike Griffin 29th overall and Darren Brewer 42nd.
Well done to all our athletes at Belleek!
