Connacht athletes performed brilliantly at the National Cross Country  championships at Santry on Sunday last. The event also served as a trial for the upcoming European Cross Country Championships at Sport Ireland Campus in Abbotstown (Fingal/Dublin) on December 12.

The Connacht Athletics region has had probably it’s most successful year in decades with great performances at National level, 2021 European  championships and Tokyo 2020.
Congratulations to these four Connacht athletes who have been selected on the Irish Team for the European Cross Country:
Thomas McStay Galway City Harriers, Thomas Devaney Castlebar Athletic Club, Keelan Kilrehill Moy Valley AC, who are on the U23 men’s team,  and Cian McPhillips Longford AC on U20 men’s team.
They are an inspiration to other young Connacht athletes to achieve similar success on both track and cross country.
Well done to too to their coaches and AC supporters.
The Irish women’s senior team will be led by Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole AC) who is a former Euro Cross Country gold medal winner at these championships in 2011 and 2012.
She is set to compete in the Valencia Marathon just a week before Abbotstown. She ran a Half Marathon 69:32 pb in Valencia in October 2021.
And will be trying to better her Chicago 2019 Marathon pb 2:26.49 on the back of that form.
