The Western People West of Ireland Women’s 10k was held today and over 2,500 runners, walkers, joggers gathered at The Mall, an ideal location in the centre of Castlebar.
Conditions were excellent for this very social fun occasion. The event was excellently organised by Mayo Sports Partnership, led by Anne Ronayne and her team, and with the help of a host of volunteers. (report and results updated 08/05)
All participants were winners today and especially the various charities who took part. Mayo AC women put the red and green icing on a predominantly pink celebratory cake and took a large slice of the prizes, winning 6 of the 9 on offer.
They repeated the recipe that brought so much success recently in the National 10k. In retaining her title, Colette Tuohy will have inspired many women as she led from start to finish in typical style. She cut minute off her 2011 time in the process. Colette warmed up by finishing first women in Athenry 5k in 18.47 last Tuesday.
Second placed Dervilla Holmes (Donore Harriers), a native of Moygownagh finished strongly for second place. She ran a 39.04 PB in the National 10k. Angela O’Connor in 3rd, ran her third 10k in a month, with very consistent finishing times. Sarah Syron finished 5th again and improved her 2011 time by over a minute. Chris Gallagher( o40 winner) and Rosie Hynes (first Junior) were almost inseparable at the line in the most exciting finish of the day.
It was good to see another Moygownagh woman, Breege Blehein return to racing with a 43 minute finish. National W55 champion,Pauline Moran was disappointed with her time but easily won the W50 section as did W60 Champion, Margaret Glavey – first W60.
