Colette leads National 10k success

At our pre race meeting point in the Park

It was an early start for our west awake runners who represented us in the National 10k Championships this morning. They made the foggy trip to the Phoenix Park and found conditions there were ideal.

Sunshine broke through an overcast sky but the temperature was not a problem. As usual it the hills along Military Road and Upper Glen Road in the final 5k that makes this race of two halves a tough task. Sixteen of our twenty one entries lined up at the start – 11 o’clock for women and 11:20 for men. The separate starts make it an honest event and takes care of any pacing issues.

Once again our women competitors put in some sizzling performances and provisional results show they brought home the bacon in terms of medals – three gold and a silver. None more so than their leading finisher Colette Tuohy who put in one of her best efforts with a typically resilient race to win the F45 category in a brilliant 39:56. Our formidable o50 team look like favourites for gold. Angela O’Connor led them home with gold F50 in 41:02, with Pauline Moran winning silver F60 in 42:27 – possibly a PB. And of course Mags Glavey consolidated their combined times with a great F65 first place in 46:17 and helped Ann McDonnell to finish in the same time – her first run in this race in ten years. The o50 team were well supported by Monica Joyce (8th F55) and Anne Murray – both under 50 minutes. Monica finished alongside Maria Kneafsey. Fidelma Gallagher made an excellent championship debut finishing in 47:07.

Mark Basquille was another making his debut (as were Pawel Lach and Greg Barry ) and he just pipped Seán Murphy to lead the men home in 37:43. David Dinsmore was into his running right from the start and finished 8th M60 leading home the men’s o50 in 42:33. Tom Hunt finished 4th M65 just outside the medals by 10 seconds chasing 3rd placed Martin McEvilly (GCH). Our third o50 man Finian Joyce is gaining on Monica with every race and was just two minutes behind today in an excellent 50:49.

Well done to all who represented Mayo AC today. We’ll update when team results are published.
