Charlestown 5k ends successful East Mayo AC series
On Saturday morning (July 10) the sixth and final race of the East Mayo AC Series took place at Charlestown. Six pods lined up at Lowpark for the one lap 5k out the Swinford road to Sonnagh and then back along quiet lanes to the finish.
News of the recent resumption of live racing in the six race series helped attract over 90 runners to the event. A wide range of clubs were represented.
James Frizzell (GCH) was first home in 16:14. He finished second in the previous series race over 6k near Knock Airport.
Paula Donnellan was the first woman finisher in 20:24. She has been in the top two in all six races and was one of nine Mayo AC athletes competing in Charlestown.
Gerry Kirrane led them home again in just over 18 minutes. Full details of finish times will be updated here when times are submitted and published by East Mayo AC.
There was a familiar air of excitement as the start pods assembled at Lowpark, and more so afterwards as finishers and officials enjoyed a cuppa and refreshments in the open air at the CBD Sports Complex.
For many the experience underlined what they have missed in recent times.
Well done to East Mayo AC and their energetic team of volunteers and officials for an excellently organised series of races.
They will now be preparing for the annual Charlestown 10k in September.
