Chairman’s outing in Maree

Club Chairman Michael McGrath has been quietly keeping pace with the
races over recent months. It is not easy being the main driving force
of the Road League, plus carrying out other vital Mayo AC tasks, to
get the chance to race.
Micheal has been a keen competitor in road racing over a range of
distances at venues near and far over the past thirty years. He can
recall races in places long vanished from the calendar since the 80s
running resurgence. He is now in the V4 50+ category and ran a good
time 43.26 in the Hollymount 10k last November. Last Sunday he ran
35.20 in the Maree 8k – ‘a well organised event with a few testing
hills’ – was his verdict. These times indicate he will be a key member
of the club’s 50+ team at the National 10k in April. Una McGrath M45
also had a fine race in 41.27. Maree winners were Matt Bidwell (GCH)
in 26.02 and clubmate Regina Casey returning to excellent form in
31.33.
For those looking ahead at 10k preparation, the 38th Tubbercurry Road
Race takes place on St Patrick’s Day, and is well placed just over
three weeks before the National 10k in the Phoenix Park on April 10.
