Carramore 10k – Race 2 Mayo AC League – May 21st 6pm
First three men 2009 l-r TJ McHugh, Robert Malseed, John Byrne
Just a couple of years ago the first race of the year in Mayo was in May – the Carramore 10k, and it signalled the start of Mayo AC’s
Annual Road League. How times have changed – boom and bust, developers
and bankers etc – and in tandem a surprising growth area. Races here,
there, and everywhere, some with race ‘directors’, technical t-shirts,
goody bags, fun runs, Fit4Life, talk of stability, stretching ,
cushioning, tapering, reps, calves, achilles, event managers,
promoters, protein, gels, chips, carbs, garmins, elites, ultras,
hamstrings, entry fees, on the day, online, on the bandwagon – how
much?!..phew! Yes, the calendar and bandwagon are well and truly
loaded. Hard to keep track. Losing the run of ourselves?
All the more reason to support races like Carramore. It will suit all
the Fit4Life groups as they test out their Spring into Summer
programmes, reducing times and improving endurance. Other athletes
will want to build confidence with a fast time and see what the hard
work done during the the recent good weather produces.
So it’s back to basics. A traditional 10k race. €10. Recession proof.
A fast flat rural one lap course. AAI permit. Recently re-measured.
Cash prizes. Keeping it simple.
The Carramore 10k has been organised by Christy Heneghan and his local
committee for the past 10 years or so. There is also a 4 mile walk
over a separate course.
Both events start at 6pm on Saturday evening 21st May and both are in
support of Mayo Roscommon Hospice.
This is the second race in the 2011 Mayo AC Road race League.
Gerry Ryan, John Byrne, Robert Malseed are previous Carramore 10k
winners and Catherine Conway, Mary Gleeson, Regina Casey have won the
women’s race. Who will win this year? Lots of league points to be won.
