Carney Lisadell 10k ‘for runners by runners’

The annual Carney Lisadell 10k race took place on Easter Monday.
400 runners and walkers took part. It was the second race in the
inaugural Sligo Credit Union Road Race League. The Sligo area has a
thriving Fit4Life programme and currently the Sligo FIT4LIFE Spring
League 2011 is on..It is an event for all levels of runner/walker. 6
events are being run on a handicap basis with slower walkers / runners
starting ahead of faster competitors. Handicaps are continually
adjusted to give every participant an equal chance. In the 10k race,
two Balloon Pacers  – under 45 mins, led by Enda Dinneen and sub 50
led by Michael O’Connell  – helped many of these runners achieve
personal bests. This idea could quite easily be replicated.  First 100
finishers were under 45 mins ( at Kilmovee 48 mins).
The course runs by the shore line of Drumcliff Bay and on uphill via
Lisadell estate to the 5k mark . This tough first half accounts for
many negative splits.
Emmet Dunleavy (Sligo AC) was the winner in 31.46. Local athlete Elish
Kelly (Raheny Shamrock) was first woman in 36.08
Mayo AC’s Christy O’Malley followed up his 44.59 at the Kilmovee 10k
on Saturday with a 45.23 finish on this much tougher course. Indeed
for a glorious half hour after the race results were displayed Christy
was shown as finishing in 37.30 – “a time I haven’t run since 1987! ”
However when the glitch in the system was discovered he returned
safely to earth.
Michael Courell M60 (Ballina AC) who also ran Kilmovee (46.33) ,
finished the Lisadell race in 46.47.while Tom Hunt won the o60
category in 39.57
The current debate on value for money races was emphasised by the
entry fee at Carney €12/14 on the day (chip timing included) .
As race organiser Mel Casserley (Sligo AC) said “The race that we run
is predominantly by runners for runners. There is some fundraising for
charities, but we are more focused on providing a good race for people
to enjoy, so anything we make on the day is a bonus” .
