Great to see many members in competitive action over the Bank Holiday weekend at Islandeady, Sligo and Burrishoole. Twenty plus members enjoyed racing over different distances and terrain over rural lanes, town centre streets, and around lakes and hillsides.
Well done to all of them and congratulations to our prizewinners.
The big race of the weekend in the West was the Streets of Sligo 5k on Saturday evening. An excellent effort by the Sligo AC organisers closed off town centre streets and ensured almost 400 competitors had an exciting race over a two lap course.
The field crossed two bridges over the Garavogue twice and finished on the riverside pedestrian parade. A top class field with club runners from far and wide provided fast times and a great spectacle for spectators lining the course. A quarter of the field finished in under 20 minutes.
Sligo-based star John Travers (Donore Harriers) was first across the line in 14:08. He has a 5,000 metres best time of 13:43 achieved last May in Belgium and a 3:55 mile from 2014. John was followed home by Damien Launders (Ennis Track) in 14:24, with JP Carty (Sligo AC) third in 14:50. Anna Reddin (Crusaders AC) won the women’s race in 17:19 and was pressed strongly by Sara Doohan (Corran AC) – a great run just six seconds behind in second. Heather Foley (Sligo AC) was third in 17:45.
There was a fulsome prize list with top three finishers in senior, o40, 50, 60 being recognised.
Four Mayo AC members competed. Anto Devaney was first home in 18:55, followed by Catherine Conway who made an excellent return to racing finishing 13th woman overall in 19:35. It’s good to see her back competing. Tom Hunt was among the prizewinners – third o60 in 21:25. Breege Staunton was entitled to be ‘very happy’ with her run – a great time 23:35.
The prizegiving HQ was right by the finish line with finishers and supporters enjoying the animated post race atmosphere and many cashing in their free burger and pint coupons.
Earlier in the day (10am) the annual Islandeady 10 and 5k races took place. Paddy O’Toole (Westport AC) strolled to an easy win in the 10k in 36:46.
