‘All this and Mayo too’ – an excellent opportunity to celebrate the 25th year in the amazing running career of John Byrne.
As a rough guide we are taking 1996 as the first year in that career when John ran his first marathon.
The last page of the Irish Runner ‘Home Straight’ – is the title on the final page of the Irish Runner magazine – some athletics related reflections by the magazine founder Ballyhaunis native, Frank Greally.
In this excerpt from the September/October 2006 edition ‘All this and Mayo too’, Frank recalls a ‘day in the life’ of John Byrne – leading runner over most of the lifetime of Mayo AC.
That day was Sunday of August 27 2006* when he won the Longford Marathon.
John is a continuing inspiration to his clubmates and followers. He is known and respected far and wide and has proudly worn our singlet with significant success.
Many of these successes over a range of distances from the mile to 100k ultra have been documented on our website since it’s inception in 2010.
They are among 1,750 website posts to date detailing our members results and accomplishments from Balla to Beijing.
So today, we salute and celebrate John’s first 25 years and look forward to the next chapter in the story of Straide’s finest strider.
