That was a really exciting and wonderful day for Irish Athletics.
The European Cross Country Championships at the Sports Campus in Abbotstown produced great racing and some excellent results for Irish teams.
The atmosphere generated by full blooded competitive endeavour was electric.
And it was added to by massive crowds lining the purpose built course.
It was indeed a great advertisement for cross-country running.
Well done to the organisers and hundreds of volunteers who made it possible.
As Rob Heffernan said today “it was the essence of sport – true and honest”.
Congratulations to the Irish medal winning teams.
And particularly to Darragh McElhinney (UCD) who won silver individual in the men’s u23 event. The Glengariff native led the Irish team and he was well supported by Keelan Kilrehill Moy Valley AC/Dromore West, who ran the race of his life to finish sixth, and also by Thomas Devaney Castlebar AC.
They came home with a brilliant team gold.
It was a truly joyful occasion seeing them on top of the podium. Delighted too for Kilrehill’s coach Emmett Dunleavy of Sligo AC.
Despite the pandemic, it has been a great year for Connacht Athletics not least on the European stage.
Today’s success will serve as an inspiration for many in the days to come.
