Week-end round-up+

The National Masters Cross Country Championships take in Derry on Sunday next 3rd Feb (not Sat 2nd as previously stated – sorry)  and we have a women’s team competing: Colette Tuohy W40, Breege Blehein and Angela O’Connor W45, and Pauline Moran W55. The following week (Feb 9th) the National Masters Indoors Track & Field championships are at Athlone AIT.

The 2013 championship season is already underway and some members took part in events at the excellent new Indoor arena at Athlone AIT.
Patrick Moran who competed there is an M55 category athlete, but under the Irish system Masters Quadrathon is M50 (as opposed to the British system where there are 5 year gaps). Consequently he was giving up to 8 years to other competitors. He finished in a creditable 5th place with a total of 1618 points – won by D Courtney (Ennis) in 1988. Pat recorded 8.9 in 60m – a pb, 4.17 metres in long jump, 8.45 in shot, and 3.53 in 1000 metres. He says “Athlone is a very welcome addition to the Irish Athletics scene – a 100% improvement on the freeze box that was Nenagh, where many of us braved the conditions there just to compete annually for the past 20 years”.
Also in Athlone our sprinter John Walkin is pictured in a photo in today’s Irish Times finishing 4th in 7.73, in one of nine 60m races at the Woodie’s DIY Games.

In other results:
John Treacy Dungarvan 10-Mile.
