Over the years a number of Mayo AC athletes have taken on the challenge of the Warriors Run. In this year’s 40th edition our regular warrior Padraic McVann was joined by a few clubmates who took on the road and hill race.

Competitors start at the beachfront in Strandhill (Co Sligo) and run to the top of Knocknarea, around Queen Maeve’s Cairn and back to the beachfront again.

For the uninitiated, a 15k plus race might seem easy. Not the Warriors Run!  Approximately nine of its kilometres are on paved roads. It’s the special six kilometres in the middle, to the top of Knocknarea that gives the race its bite. They include a 700 foot climb through fields, loose gravel, unsurfaced and heather paths. .

At its steepest incline on the way up, even elite athletes slow to a walk and then brace themselves to face the equally daunting downhill run, often on slippery slopes, even in the driest of weather.

Mayo AC’s first finisher today was Darragh Healy in 1:14.55. Next back at sea-level was Padraic McVann 1:17.54, followed by John Reilly? 1:23.52, Eimear Fitzmaurice 1:26.27, Ruth Carney 1:27.16, Donna Gallagher 1:28.12.

Well done to them all!

The top three men today were:

Gavin Callery 56:14, Sergei Raschupin 56:53, Alan Dunne 57:07.

First three women:

Sarah McCormack 1:03.16, Nichola Doyle 1:07.52, Orla Drumm 1:08.04 .
